An art project that captures the sentiment and emergency response in times of wildfires

This project is for you, for those that have been impacted by natural disasters, for emergency responders, and for everyone else.

The Project

Welcome to “The Art of Safe Keeping.” I initiated this community art project about wildfires after I, together with many others, evacuated due to wildfires in 2024. It was a frightening and uncertain time for our remote communities in the Slocan Lake area. While the 7 different wildfires around us kept growing, the smoke obscured our views of what was happening out there, leaving many people in the dark about the state of their properties. During this time, every few days new areas were being evacuated. There was a big movement of people in both directions: locals evacuating and emergency responders arriving. Volunteers stepped up to look after one another, some of them evacuees themselves. This event was just one of many; wildfires and other natural disasters are impacting people all over the world. Art can help people process their feelings and broaden perspectives. We can express ourselves through art; share, gather, be heard, learn, heal and reflect.

This project would not be here without support of many sponsors, contributors, volunteers and yourself.
Thank you! With Gratitude, Petra Hekkenberg, artist from New Denver BC

“The Art of Safe Keeping” takes place in two phases:

1. The Interactive Map

During the Summer of 2025, a large interactive map of the Slocan Lake area was displayed in the town of New Denver. On this map, the public marked down if and where they evacuated to during the 2024 Slocan Lake Complex fires. Did they bring their animals? Or did people stay at home? Color-coded pins and strings share the stories and movements. As an extra layer, the organized emergency response is depicted on the map in red. Over 1300 fire fighters and other emergency responders came to help! Where did they come from, and what organizations helped? What is all involved in the art of safe keeping?

Next to the map, people can also shared what their most precious belongings are that they want to keep safe in case of evacuations. These stories will be used by Petra in phase 2 of the project. You can still participate online in this by sharing what one of your most precious belonging is and why.

2. The Exhibition and book

Using the stories that were shared during phase 1, about 20 most precious belongings of people will be selected in the winter of 2026. Petra Hekkenberg will create artworks of these items in black pen and charcoal from the fires. These artworks, accompanied with the personal stories of the owners, as well as the interactive map and all other work, will result in an art exhibition in the Summer of 2026 and is currently applying for galleries to tour in 2027.
Confirmed dates:
July 14-19 Hidden Garden Gallery, New Denver BC
July 24 – September 15 The Langham, Kaslo, BC

The project will conclude with a published book; a book about the art of safe keeping.

3 Ways for you to participate

For everyone

Share which personal belonging is precious to you

In times of wildfires and other natural disasters, evacuations are on our mind. Maybe you have evacuated before, have had your go-bag ready, or perhaps evacuation concerns you for the future. It makes us consider what personal belongings we want to keep safe. What is one of your most precious belongings that you would evacuate?

For impacted locals

Pin on the map what you did during the 2024 Slocan Lake Complex fires
– CLOSED –

In the Summer of 2025 people could place their story on the map in New Denver by pinning if, and where they evacuated to. A mobile version travelled to the villages of Slocan and Appledale. Starting November 2025, the map will be displayed in the meeting room of MLA Brittny Anderson in Nelson!

For emergency responders

Tell us who took part in emergency response of 2024

Are you an emergency responder that helped keep the Slocan Lake Complex area safe? Or do you know other companies that came out to help? Let us know! This data will be added to the visual map and the data already collected. Your input will help complete the picture! (No names of individuals shall be mentioned)
